It's More Than Just an Easter Bunny Cake

Connor loved Easter. Even in high school and college, he loved getting an Easter basket, having ham for dinner and he insisted I make his favorite bunny cake. Last year (my first Easter and holiday without him), I tried to keep things normal by having family over and doing his famous golden egg hunt. But, it hurt so badly.
This year, I wanted to get away so I escaped to North Carolina. It’s become my healing place. Being in nature and seeing the beautiful mountains is peaceful and with spring upon us, the trees are budding new leaves and the birds are chirping earlier and louder. This is a constant - and painful - reminder that life goes on whether I want it to or not.
I know that Easter isn’t a holiday about ham and bunny cake. It’s about Jesus sacrificing himself to save the world from sin. I’m grateful and thank God every day that Connor knew that too. Knowing he’s with God in Heaven is a grace that I am beyond grateful for because it means I will see him again…and not just in my dreams.
So, this year I made his bunny cake and we had ham for dinner, but more importantly, I was thankful for the time I had with Connor and for the sacrifice Jesus made so that I can, one day, be with him again. ∞
